Middle School promotion requires students to successfully complete at least five classes each year.
To graduate from Southwestern Academy, students are required to complete the following, with five credits earned each semester in each class:
||CREDIT REQUIRED FOR A DIPLOMA
|30 credits with 10 credits required in U.S. History, 10 in World Cultures/Geography, 5 in U.S. Government, 5 in Economics.
||40 credits, including at least a year of literature. All students must take an English class each semester, even if 40 credits have been earned already.
All English classes will include frequent writing and the reading of literature. (ESL 3 with minimum A/B grade in Reading 3 and Writing 3 may substitute for English I.)
||30 credits required, 40 preferred, including elementary and advanced algebra, geometry or IMP/Interactive programs, advanced math.
||20 credits required,
30 preferred, in lab science providing fundamental knowledge in at least two areas: biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics. Earth/space science courses must include basics of biology, chemistry, or physics.
|A Language Other
|20 credits of the same language; 30 credits preferred.
|10 credits taken in one year in the same discipline of music, or visual art, or drama/theater.
||50 credits minimum, of which at least 10 must be college preparatory courses.
||40 credits, 10 a year. (Other physical activities may be substituted IF a student has obtained permission IN ADVANCE from the director of athletics, and if the student submits certification of the activity by the end of the semester.)
||100 hours minimum completed for high school graduation. Seniors must complete these hours before Memorial Day.
