MIDDLE SCHOOL
SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT

Students entering grades 7, 8, and 9 in September are expected to read a minimum of three books from this list during their summer vacation—one book a month—and submit a book report on each one.

The reports should include:

  • Description of the main characters and setting of the story
  • Brief plot summary
  • Short evaluation of the book

During the first weeks of the fall term, teachers will discuss the books with each student and verify that they have been read. In addition, Southwestern encourages students to keep aware of current events by reading newspapers or weekly news magazines. This list emphasizes young adult selections, but advanced readers are free to choose books from the high school list.

Other comparable titles may be substituted, but summer credit will generally not be given for books that are studied in class: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Pride and Prejudice, To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, The Old Man and the Sea, The Great Gatsby, The Crucible, Native Son, The Jungle, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Good Earth, Flowers from Algernon, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Pigman, The Outsiders, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Time Machine, The Sun Also Rises.
