Contributing to the Whole

A critical component of the Southwestern Academy experience is learning how to live in a diverse community, not just on campus but also as part of a global society. Through volunteerism, our students consistently recognize the importance and value of assisting those who are in need.

Our steadfast belief is that if we educate our students about the hardships of the world at large, they innately recognize their own ability to make a positive impact within society. As a result, they routinely make the choice to spend their free time in evenings and on weekends to help both local and national charities and causes.

A philosophy of contributing to the whole is deeply rooted at Southwestern. It dates back to the early 1930’s when our campus housed the destitute and homeless during the Great Depression, and later, when our students stepped forward to assist with the war effort during World War II.

Nowadays, whether it’s serving meals at the Los Angeles Food Bank, writing letters to senior citizens to help combat elderly isolation, sewing pillows for our furry friends at the Pasadena Humane Society, cleaning up the world famous beaches in the Los Angeles region, or visiting young people at the local Children’s Hospital, Southwestern Academy students have always answered the call to service.

This community-minded approach to volunteerism is one of the backbones of our educational philosophy. Here are just a few of the local and national organizations to which our students have recently contributed:
